69. John Low per Shipley, runaway from Port Macquarie charged with theft on board H.M. Cutter Mermaid....Mary Morrage, a soldier s wife proceeding from Port Macquarie to Sydney per Mermaid, states.....In the course of yesterday I came on shore from the cutter, leaving my box on the quarter deck. When I returned on board I found that it had been broken into and various articles stolen therefrom and from a pack belonging to my husband, amongst other things 5 new shirts, a pair of blue regimental trousers, a white jacket, a red striped gown, 2 children s frocks and a petticoat. The gown, frocks and petticoat now before the court are my property. John Collins, soldier of the Buffs, states I was at the wharf yesterday afternoon at the wharf. I saw the prisoner with a bundle under his arm. I suspected it to be stolen property and examined it. I found it to consist of the gown and other articles before the court....David Meffan, overseer of the gaol gang, states....the prisoner belongs to my gang. He was at work yesterday on the wharf. I saw the sentry take the gown, frock and petticoat from the prisoner. The prisoner in his defence states, that not having been on the Mermaid he could not have been guilty of the theft and that he found the property under the wharf.. Guilty of having stolen property in his possession knowing it to have been stolen.. Sentenced to fifty lashes
